Russia Calls on Nationals to Avoid Venezuela Visit

(MENAFN) Russia’s Embassy in Caracas on Monday issued a travel warning, urging nationals to avoid trips to Venezuela “unless absolutely necessary.”

The alert, published by the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Situation and Crisis Center, said it “strongly advised” against visiting the South American country “in connection with the US armed aggression against Venezuela and threats of further attacks.”

The advisory followed a dramatic US military operation on Saturday that seized Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were flown to New York to face criminal charges.

According to The New York Times, citing Venezuelan officials, about 80 people were killed during the raid.

Maduro and Flores are currently held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. US prosecutors accuse them of drug trafficking and ties to gangs designated as terrorist groups.

Maduro has rejected the allegations, while officials in Caracas demanded the couple’s release.

On Saturday, the Russian Foreign Ministry declared that Moscow, in response to the arrests, “strongly” urged Washington to “reconsider this position and release the legitimately elected president of a sovereign country and his wife.”
