US calls on Americans in Venezuela to leave straightaway
In a formal alert, officials described conditions as uncertain and warned that armed groups known locally as colectivos were reportedly establishing checkpoints on roads and inspecting vehicles for signs of U.S. citizenship or perceived ties to the United States.
Officials said that, with some international flights now operating again, Americans present in the country should leave “immediately” and should “remain vigilant and exercise caution” when traveling to airports or moving within Venezuelan territory.
The advisory highlighted that Venezuela is designated at the highest travel warning level due to a range of dangers, including wrongful detention, torture in custody, terrorism, kidnapping, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, widespread crime, civil unrest, and inadequate health infrastructure.
In response, Venezuelan authorities dismissed the U.S. warning as being based on unfounded claims meant to exaggerate the level of risk. Venezuelan leaders described the situation as calm and stable, asserting that the security alert did not reflect conditions on the ground.
The U.S. evacuation notice follows a recent military operation in which American forces captured the country’s president and his spouse, leading to heightened tensions and ongoing uncertainty about safety and stability throughout Venezuela.
