Trump says he wouldn’t mind kidnapping Putin

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump stated that he has no intention of authorizing an operation to seize Russian President Vladimir Putin, brushing aside the suggestion when questioned by reporters and indicating that such a step would not be required.

His comments followed a recent US special forces operation that resulted in the detention of Venezuela’s president during an assault on his residence in Caracas. In response to that incident, Ukraine’s leader commented, “If you can do that with dictators, then the United States knows what to do next.”

During a question-and-answer session with journalists while meeting energy sector executives at the White House on Friday, a reporter referred to that remark and suggested it sounded like a call for similar action against the Russian leader. The journalist then asked Trump directly whether he would ever approve a mission to capture Putin.

Trump rejected the premise, replying, “Well, I don’t think it’s going to be necessary. I’ve always had a great relationship with him.” He went on to say he was “very disappointed” that his attempts over the past year to broker a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine had failed to yield results.

Russia has strongly condemned the seizure of Venezuela’s president, describing the action as a serious breach of the country’s sovereignty. Moscow’s representative to the United Nations characterized the US operation as “banditry” that is driving the international system toward “chaos and lawlessness.”

Separately, Russian authorities said last month that Ukraine launched nearly 100 drones toward one of Putin’s official residences in the Novgorod Region, claiming all of the unmanned aircraft were intercepted before reaching their objective. While Kiev denied any intention to strike the Russian leader’s holiday property, Russian military officials later provided the United States with what they described as recovered navigation equipment from a downed Ukrainian drone, which they said contained details of its intended flight route.
